A loud crash, when a Guinness bottle crushes. Ovens so hot, that you can melt glass into red-hot balls of fire, and fast hands, which mould them into beads – before the glass harden. Then the beads are put on a string, in neat patterns and colourful formations.
In short, this is the process: From bottle to bead, from bead to jewellery.
But if you ask Silkevejen in the capitol of Denmark, Copenhagen, and Sun Trade in Accra, Ghana, the production of jewellery is not just about trade. It is also about development and design. That is why they started cooperating in February 2005.
Supported by Danida they have developed the designs of the jewellery, build a gas oven in a Ghanaian workshop – to help secure the valuable tree resources of Ghana, and they have made sure that the employees got the proper education.
Behind every bead and every single design stands a human. That is why the cooperation puts its focus on developing both professional and personal skills.
